Animals from Kenya, Africa: Wildlife You’ll Encounter on Safari

Kenya’s ecosystems—from the Maasai Mara to Tsavo, Amboseli, and the Great Rift Valley lakes—are home to a remarkable variety of animals. Whether you’re on a classic game drive or exploring the coast, these are some of the most fascinating Kenyan wildlife species to look out for.

Plan your journey with Steve and Richard Safaris for guided tours across Kenya’s national parks.

The Big Five Animals of Kenya

  1. African Elephant
The largest land mammal on Earth, elephants are commonly seen in Tsavo East, Amboseli, and the Mara.

Amboseli is famous for its elephant herds and views of Mt. Kilimanjaro (KWS – Amboseli)

  2. Lion
Found in most national parks, particularly Maasai Mara, where prides hunt on the open plains.

  3. Leopard
Solitary and elusive, leopards often dwell in trees. Best spotted in Samburu, Mara, and Tsavo.

  4. Buffalo
Powerful and unpredictable, buffalo are found in nearly all of Kenya’s parks.

  5. Rhino
Black and white rhinos are endangered but can be seen in protected areas like Ol Pejeta Conservancy and Lake Nakuru National Park.
