Detailed 5 Days Tsavo East, Tsavo West, Salt Lick & Amboseli Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival and Game Viewing in Tsavo East National Park
Your safari begins with an early morning departure from Mombasa or Nairobi, heading toward Tsavo East National Park. As you enter the park, the landscape opens into vast savannah plains dotted with acacia trees and seasonal rivers.
This first game drive introduces you to Tsavo’s famous red elephants, along with giraffes, zebras, buffalo, and a variety of antelope species. Lions are often spotted resting under shrubs, while birds of prey circle overhead.
You arrive at your lodge in time for lunch and a short rest. In the afternoon, enjoy a relaxed game drive along wildlife-rich areas near the Galana River, where animals gather to drink, especially during the dry season.
Return to the lodge before sunset for dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Tsavo East to Tsavo West – Scenic Landscapes and Springs
After breakfast, enjoy a final morning game drive in Tsavo East as the park comes alive with early activity. You then drive toward Tsavo West National Park, a region known for its dramatic terrain, volcanic hills, and dense vegetation.
Tsavo West offers a completely different safari experience. Wildlife sightings are more intimate, often occurring in thick bush or near permanent water sources. A highlight of the day is a visit to Mzima Springs, where crystal-clear pools reveal hippos, crocodiles, and fish beneath the surface.
After lunch at the lodge, head out for an afternoon game drive exploring lava flows, rocky viewpoints, and wildlife corridors. The scenery here is as memorable as the animals themselves.
Dinner and overnight in Tsavo West.
Day 3: Tsavo West to Taita Hills – Salt Lick Safari Lodge Experience
This morning, depart Tsavo West and travel toward the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, a private conservation area bordering Tsavo. The change in environment is noticeable as rolling hills replace open plains.
You arrive at Salt Lick Safari Lodge in time for lunch. The lodge is elevated on stilts and overlooks an active waterhole, allowing you to observe elephants, buffalo, zebras, and antelope directly from the lodge.
The afternoon is spent on a guided game drive within the sanctuary, where wildlife density is high and sightings are often close. As evening approaches, return to the lodge to watch animals gather at the waterhole below.
After dinner, nighttime wildlife viewing continues from the lodge’s observation decks, offering a unique safari experience without leaving your room.
Overnight at Salt Lick Safari Lodge.
Day 4: Taita Hills to Amboseli National Park
After breakfast, depart the Taita Hills region and drive south toward Amboseli National Park. The journey gradually opens into wide, flat plains with Mount Kilimanjaro rising on the horizon on clear days.
Upon arrival, enjoy lunch at your lodge before heading out for an afternoon game drive. Amboseli is renowned for its large elephant herds, many with impressive tusks, as well as wildebeest, giraffes, hyenas, and big cats.
The park’s open terrain provides excellent visibility, making it ideal for photography. Weather permitting, Mount Kilimanjaro provides a striking backdrop as the sun begins to set.
Dinner and overnight in Amboseli.
Day 5: Morning Safari in Amboseli and Departure
Begin the day with an early morning game drive, the best time to observe predators returning from hunts and elephants moving across the plains. Morning light also offers the clearest views of Mount Kilimanjaro before clouds form.
After breakfast at the lodge, begin your return journey to Nairobi or Mombasa. Along the way, reflect on the diverse landscapes, wildlife encounters, and unique lodge experiences that made this safari memorable.
Arrival is scheduled for late afternoon or early evening.
